Join Us - Learn About Online
Social Networking with a Purpose
At the San Francisco Public Library!
 
The Community Living Campaign (CLC), in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library, is offering free introductory sessions about social networking and Tyze, a free on-line service to end isolation and loneliness and help rebuild community for people facing life's challenges. 
 
Sessions will showcase Tyze and provide hands-on assistance for those wishing to establish a Tyze personal network for themselves or someone they care about. Tyze networks are fun, easy places to plan events, tell stories, post pictures, and even securely store important documents on-line.     
 
Marie Jobling and Community Connectors from the Community Living Campaign will compare Tyze to Facebook and other social media at the locations and times listed below.
 
Curious if Tyze is for you?  Go to www.tyze.com to learn how 20 years of experience by the PLAN Institute leaders of Canada led to this innovation.

All programs at SFPL are free. Participants will benefit most if they have an active email account and can access their email from the web. 
 
All sessions will be held in rooms with access to computers for all participants.   If you have your own laptop, you may bring it and access the Library's free Wi-Fi system.   Space is limited and varies by branch site. Please sign up to assure your space - pre-register by emailing tyze@sfcommunityliving.org or calling 415-821-1003.

Next Seeds of Hope Community Garden Event - March 20

Remember how nice it is to sit in the front yard, enjoy the plants and birds, say "Hi" to your neighbors and just visit with friends?  Well, now you can relive that experience even if you don't have a front yard.  Join us at the next Seeds of Hope Community Garden event and bring someone who doesn't get out much.  As always, there is delicious food, good drinks and interesting company.  The next Community Garden Event is Saturday, March 20, 11:00 to 1:00, Park Street Community Garden, at 1 Park Street, one block West of Mission Street near Bernal Heights.  Click HERE to view a map.

S.F. Wins National Award for Dementia & Alzheimer's Work

San Francisco's Department of Aging and Adult Services, New York City's Museum of Modern Art and Arizona's Banner Alzheimer's Institute are the winners of a national award for Innovations in Alzheimer's Disease Caregiving. 
The national organization, Family Caregiver Alliance and The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation announced the recipients of the 2009 Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer's Disease Caregiving Legacy Awards on Monday. The award comes with a cash gift of $20,000. Some 100 government agencies, universities and non-profit organizations nationwide submitted their projects and programs for consideration for the prestigious award.
 
San Francisco received the award for its Strategy for Excellence in Dementia Care and Alzheimer's/Dementia Summit. This collaborative effort, led by San Francisco's Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), guided the Alzheimer's Expert Panel, appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom through a six-month planning process to develop an eleven-year strategy for dementia care for the City, launched by a day-long Alzheimer's/Dementia Summit held in City Hall in July of this year.  The Community Living Campaign played a role in organizing the Summit event.  
 
The Gilbert Innovations Awards are intended to promote sound principles and stimulate innovation in the field of Alzheimer's and dementia care-giving by recognizing and rewarding those efforts which lead the way to address the pressing needs of dementia care and policy into the future.
 
San Francisco will receive the award at this month's ASA/NCOA Conference in Chicago.  You can view or download the Report here - Report Part 1 and Part 2.

Administration on Aging is Coming to Town to Listen March 1  
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since 1965, the Older Americans Act (OAA) has gained recognition as a unique and highly regarded statute that has stimulated the development of a comprehensive and coordinated service system. This system has contributed greatly to enhancing the lives of older individuals, family caregivers, and persons with disabilities.  Many of the services and supports that we have come to appreciate have been funded through this federal initiative and it is scheduled for debate and re-authorization next year.  San Francisco is the site of a Listening Session - What do you think is most needed now? The morning session will feature a panel addressing 3 topics - Elder Rights and Elder Justice; Prevention and Wellness - Healthy Aging; and Aging Network Infra-structure for Serving Diverse Needs.  The afternoon has scheduled testimony and written comment can be submitted as well.  The event is Wednesday, March 3 from 9:00 to 4:30 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 5 Embarcadero Center.  See the full agenda by clicking HERE.  Learn more about the Listening Sessions and ways to provide input on-line or in writing, click HERE.
